LEAF EDMONTON

LEAF EDMONTON AGM: 

The Edmonton branch endeavours to provide LEAF Members, supporters and donors with a forum to both discuss and learn about current equality issues and meet like-minded women.  We also seek to provide our Members with opportunites to learn about, become involved in and contribute to the work of LEAF, through the "No Means No" Committee, our education and events committees, and our branch executive.


In November 2008, LEAF Edmonton signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with LEAF National.  We are currently in the process of reviewing a draft Branch Constitution.

LEAF's 25th Anniversary Party
On April 16th, we celebrated our 25th birthday (and that of the Charter, as well) with dancing, laughter and cake.  Bomba! provided fantastic music and we had a wonderful evening with friends, old and new.  Many thanks to all of those who worked so tirelessly to make this event a success.

In January, 2010, Dr. Gotell spoke on the Garneau Sisterhood and the community response to sexual assault in Edmonton

Persons Day Breakfast - 80th Anniversary
On November 6, 2009, Doris Buss delivered a lecture entitled, "What Went Wrong?:  Prosecuting Rape at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda" at LEAF Edmonton's fundraising breakfast in honour of the 80th Anniversary of the judicial recognition that women are indeed "persons".

LEAF Edmonton members Jo-Ann Kolmes and Marcia Tait collaborated with LEAF National:
On May 19, 2009 LEAF submitted a response to the Federal Task Force Report: Submission of LEAF and LEAF Edmonton on the Length of Service Requirement for Maternity and Parental Leave Under the Canada Labour Code.


Edmonton LEAF holds AGM & Equality Day Social
On April 17, 2009 LEAF Edmonton hosted their AGM and made it a fundrasier in support of the "No Mean No" Education Program.

"Feminization of a Legal Practice: Struggles and Strategies for Practicing Feminist Law"was supported by LEAF Edmonton on February 5, 2009 which was organized by the Legal Activist Collective (LAC) from the Faculty of Law, University of Alberta.  The panelists spoke about the barriers and opportunities faced by those who want to bring explicit feminist principles to their practices in the courthouse, private practice and government.  The five panelists included:

Madam Justice Sheila Greckol - previous counsel on human rights cases, in particular the Vriend case which successfully added sexual orientation to the prohibited grounds of discriminaion in the Alberta Human Rights Code.

Marie Gordon, Q.C. - a well-known and respected family law lawyer from Gordon Zwaenepoel who helped establish the Morgentaler Clinic in Edmonton.

Moria Vane - Animal Protection Prosecuter for the Provicne ofAlberta and former intern at the United Nations Development Programme.

Nonnie Jackson - associate with MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman LLP in the area of corporate and commercial law, who advises a number of First Nation economic development organizations and business enterprises.

Alia Ally - from Central Legal Services Team, who provides legal services to the Department of Agriculture and works on trade and privacy matters thoughout government.
